Founder, Society for Science

Edward W. Scripps, a renowned journalist, co-founded Science Service — now Society for Science — in 1921 to keep the public informed of scientific achievements.

The founders began by providing a news service for reporters. Then, in 1922, due to interest from non-journalists, they started distributing Science News-Letter, which became a magazine in 1926. It quickly grew into a prime source of science news for libraries, schools, and the public.

This strong demand for scientific information by the public led Scripps to include our organization in his estate plans. His support directly helped grow and evolve the organization you support now: Society for Science.

Scripps' investment truly set the Society up for long term success and allowed us to have the flexibility to answer the public's call for reliable scientific journalism and the support of budding young scientists around the world.

He knew how important our work truly is, and saw that by putting the Society in his estate plans, he would have a long-lasting impact on science journalism and STEM education.
